Just memories : typed transcript, [1940].

Reminiscence (30 leaves) by Chapin when she was 94 years old, concerning her life from the time of her voyage to Calif. with her family from Albany, N.Y., when she was a young girl ca. 1857, until shortly after her marriage in 1879. Includes descriptions of Los Angeles in the late 1850s, San Rafael ca. 1860-1861, and San Francisco from 1862. Mentions public schools, neighborhoods and roads, elected officials, and other details of everyday life; as well as several artists, writers, doctors, and actors. Includes some details of prison breaks, attempted escapes, and prison life at San Quentin, where her father served as warden in 1861. With the reminiscence is a typed transcript (2 leaves) of what appears to be a newspaper article, possibly from the Los Angeles Times, dated Feb. 4, 1940, titled: Along El Camino Real with Ed Ainsworth, which features Chapin as having lived during the 1860 U.S. Census; the article was written during the 1940 census.
